I am Mario Mejia Pantaleón, coordinator in the field of education and currently coordinator of COMADEP in Petén. I was born in a poor peasant family and brought up in the cooperativist movement.

I have been working with COMADEP for 6 years in the formation of professional teachers, and very recently I became the new regional coordinator. I feel very satisfied and fulfilled with my job in which I work with human development. This work for me is the university of life. Here, with our experience we all learn from each other. I am partly responsible for the implementation of the philosophy and of alternatives for the development of the activities of COMADEP in the state of Petén.

Emeldina Gaspar Hernández, 37 years old, is a teacher in the little village Esmeralda. It´s a small mountain village with just 108 families, lost in the jungle; the nearest village is over 30 km down the bumpy road. Esmeralda is a village consisting of the so called 'retornados', the Guatemalan people who had to flee to Mexico during Guatemala´s armed conflict.

In the early eighties Emeldina and the people from her village had to flee to the mountains. ¨Most of us thought we would never set foot on our ground again¨, Emeldina remembers. It was the time of the bloody killings by the paramilitary that later became known as the scorched earth politics implemented by the generals Lucas Garcia and Efraín Ríos Montt.
